Make a homemade moist heating pad or cold pillow from handy ingredients you may already have in the kitchen for fast relief of muscle aches and pains.
When a favorite massage therapist is out of town and the electric heating pad is in the dog’s bed, a homemade moist heating pad or a cold pillow goes a long way to soothing strains and pains from the day’s activities. Everyone pulls a muscle once in a while or twists an ankle. Sometimes folks forget to stock first aid supplies in the house. Making easy homemade first aid moist heating pads or cold pillows to stash in the freezer takes only minutes and costs less than a dollar each.
Make Several Moist Heating Pads or Cold Pillows at the Same Time
It’s fast and easy to make a moist heating pad. Make two or three at the same time and keep several in the freezer for cold pillows.
Choose a filler for the moist heating pad from the list provided below. If making more than one moist heat pack or cold pillow at the same time, calculate the total amount of filler needed ahead of time.
Fill a microwavable plastic freezer bag half way with the filler. Use bags that have a double seal, just for reassurance that the bag will remained sealed when it gets squished and pushed around into place. Press the bag flat to release as much air as possible when sealing it.
Warm the moist heating pad bag of filler in the microwave for one to three minutes until it feels slightly hot to the touch.
Remove the heated bag from the microwave carefully and shake gently to distribute the filling so the heat is spread evenly.
Wrap the bag in a soft towel to use as a dry heating pad. To use as a moist heating pad, wet a small hand towel in warm water and wring out very well. Wrap the heated bag in the moist towel and place on painful muscles or joints for soothing relief.
To use as a cold pillow, place the filled plastic baggie in the freezer instead of heating in the microwave. Store one or two in the freezer to have on hand when needed.
To make a homemade heating pad for warming small areas like the side of your neck or a groin injury, use a tube sock filled with your choice of fillers. Add filler and heat in the microwave. Tie the end of the sock after filling the foot area to hold the filler material in place.
To create a smaller sized moist heating pad, use a smaller plastic baggie as described above. After heating the baggie, wet a tube sock , squeeze excess water until the sock is just damp. Place the warmed plastic baggie with filler in the sock for warm, moist heat.
Choose from a variety of filler ingredients:
• uncooked rice
• buckwheat hulls
• flax seed
Scent a hot pack with your favorite herb such as dried lavender flowers, rosemary or rose petals for luxurious relaxation.
