A lot of attention has been given to the spikey green fruit from South America known as soursop. A recent claim that it is more effective than chemotherapy at killing cancer cells has created a stir in internet forums and worldwide, leaving many people seeking answers about this so called miracle fruit. Mother Nature has once again held the secret to curing cancer for thousands of years? The idea of a free, natural cure for cancer with no side effects is an exciting prospect, but one which must be fully researched before embarking on any kind of alternative treatment.
Known as guanabana in Spanish, soursop or graviola is the fruit of the Annona Muricata tree, and is found in many parts of South America, Africa, and the Caribbean. Rich in vitamin C, vitamin D, carbohydrates, and natural fructose, the inside of the fruit is a fleshy white pulp with flavours reminiscent of coconut, strawberry, peaches and pineapple combined into one delicious mouthful. It is regularly consumed in its native lands, and local people have been aware of its healing properties for centuries. Recently it has entered the western market and is used to flavour ice cream, sherbet, and fruit juice. It is also available in tablet form from health food shops, and as a tea made from the dried leaves.
Effective Cancer Treatment
Soursop began receiving attention as a cancer treatment in 1976 after The National Cancer Institute conducted a study into the plant’s apparent effectiveness at killing cancer cells. Experiments conducted in vitro showed that soursop extracts were particularly effective at killing some cancer cells that are notoriously resistant to chemotherapy. It also showed selective toxicity by attacking only the cancerous cells, and leaving healthy cells intact. Several different studies are currently underway to further explore the cancer fighting abilities of soursop; Various research groups have already filed patents after isolating certain anti-tumorous compounds within the fruit.
These findings are welcome news to anyone suffering from cancer, and alone or in combination with other alternative cancer therapies, graviola may be the next step in a natural treatment that sidesteps conventional toxic chemotherapy. Human trials have yet to be conducted, and some research has shown that excessive ingestion of soursop can cause neurological symptoms similar to Parkinson’s disease. However, as will all natural therapies, it’s important to work with a knowledgeable natural health practitioner to ascertain the correct dose for each individual’s unique needs. There is also no evidence to show its effectiveness when combined with other cancer treatments such as chemo and radiotherapy; however, many cancer patients have begun using soursop along with their current medical treatment and have been able to reduce the amounts and duration of time needed on conventional treatment.
There are many stories online offering anecdotal evidence of patients that have completely cured themselves of cancer using only the healing properties of the soursop tree. Some people claim that the drug companies are suppressing the knowledge that a natural fruit has such powerful healing powers in order to continue profiting from the outdated therapies offered to every cancer sufferer. This is typical and to be expected of the conventional medical community and Big Pharm. The cancer industry is a business which profits from disease, so it is conceivable that they want to keep any potential cure off the market until they have had a chance to patent it.
Whether or not it is in fact a miracle cancer cure, the healing powers of soursop graviola are undeniable, and regular ingestion has proven to be beneficial to our health. It has been shown to alleviate symptoms associated with disorders such as urinary tract infection, migraine, fever, and digestive discomfort. With a delicious citrus taste, and packed with vitamins and minerals which are vital to our wellbeing, it is a welcome addition to any nutritional diet.
The Graviola Soursop Smoothie
Whether or not you currently have cancer, graviola is delicious served fresh as a smoothie or shake. Its health benefits justify drinking a glassful daily as support for your immune system, and for the treatment of active cancer. It’s simple to make the shake. Scoop the white pulp from the rind and remove seeds. Place about 1 cup in a blender with purified water and blend until it reaches the consistency you prefer for a smoothie. It makes a creamy white shake that looks similar to coconut milk. You should not need to sweeten as the ripe fruit is quite sweet. If you do sweeten, add stevia rather than sugar, which feeds cancer. Pour into a chilled glass or add ice cubes to the mix and make it thick and frothy. Very smooth and refreshing.
