Flu season is here. Many states are reporting that the flu is widespread, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. When it comes to the flu, traditionally the very young and the elderly have been the most likely to get infected. But a recent report by USA Today said that young adults may be more likely to get infected by the predominant flu strain of H1N1. Because the flu is often more dangerous than a common cold, it’s important to understand the difference. Key symptoms are similar, but flu is usually more severe and characterized by severe body aches, headaches and fever, and can last for a week or more, compared to most colds which last just a few days.
Homeopathic remedies can be effective in managing symptoms associated with flu and colds by reducing the severity of symptoms, and encouraging a speedier recovery.* The key to success in doing so is matching the right homeopathic remedy with an individual’s symptoms. This can be challenging. To help, we’ve put together a simple web page application with content from Dr. Stephen Messer, N.D.’s Cold & Flu Remedy Finder. It’s important to point out that these homeopathic remedies do not prevent the flu, and if you suspect that you have the flu you should always seek professional medical help. Here are some of the more common homeopathic remedies for flu symptoms:
Homeopathic remedies for flu symptoms
Ferrum phos – This cell salt gives support to low riding fevers, especially in babies, children or anyone who catches cold easily. Whenever symptoms like redness, heat, throbbing or fever, suggest acute irritations (sore red throat, toothache, minor ear pain, common colds, skin eruptions, etc.), Ferr phos helps the body make the blood do its job and fix the problem quickly. Ferr phos does have a few more specific applications. The shooting or throbbing headaches it relieves are better with an ice pack, especially if sun induced. When pain involves joints, especially if only one joint tends to be irritated at a time. Stomachs that vomit undigested food can appreciate Ferrum phos as can certain cases of incontinence and urinary leaks at night.*
Belladonna – This one helps relieve symptoms involving heat – hot fevers, hot to the touch, hot face, hot temper, hot spots, hot throats, hot ears… though hands and feet are probably cool. Its cold or flu has a sudden fever, hot dry sore throat, a dry, hard, barking cough and red face. In most Belladonna cases, the symptoms often follow exposure to cold air when wet (swimming or rain, wet hair). If similar symptoms result from too much fun in the sun, Belladonna can be called on to relieve minor heat symptoms. Don’t underestimate its throbbing pains. It can quickly relieve dizzying, throbbing headaches that will not let you bend over.* Please note that anytime headaches run high or last long, professional guidance is advised. If your doctor is using new protocol to wait 24-48 hours before taking direct action, that’s a perfect time for letting Belladonna relieve cold, flu and ear pain symptoms.
Bryonia – Bryonia was given the nicknames ‘grumpy bear’ because it applies best when stress or illness sets off a grumpy irritabilty that refuses comfort and does not want to be spoken to, bothered or moved in any way. Bryonia relieves ailments that approach slowly, linger too long and may result from being chilled when overheated or from fast weather changes. It specializes in cold and flu symptoms involving dryness. They have a dry, hacking cough with stitching pains, bone-aching, chill-ridden fever, great thirst for cold water, dry throat and a “don’t touch me, leave me alone” growl.*
Eupatorium – This remedy earned the name ‘boneset’ as an herb used to purge ‘bone breaking’ fevers by encouraging perspiration. As ‘like cures like’, the homeopathic Eupatorium applies best to flu or cold symptoms marked by aching bones, muscles and even eyes, plus shivering chills and throbbing headaches. Except for the sharp headaches which may or may not begin with the flu, all the symptoms it relieves improve with sweating and rest and are marked by restlessness and a great thirst for cold drinks and hunger for ice cream.*
Gelsemium – Possibly best known for its ability to relieve certain flu symptoms, Gelsemium aids an achy, weak, heavy, yet somewhat restless or trembling types of flu that build up gradually to great fatigue. Its flu relief includes diverse symptoms including aching fever, chills and congestion; flushed face, droopy eyelids, little thirst, a lump in the throat sensation, pain from throat to ear on swallowing, a dazed, dull mind and much fatigue. A Gelsemium-style dull congestive headache symptoms include: hammering, pulsating, ‘like a tight band’, occipital pain that you cannot do anything but lie still.*
Aconite – Easing colds symptoms in their initial phase is Aconite’s claim to fame. When shocked by cold wind or trauma, our bodies become more susceptible to colds. As soon as noses run or sore throat flare, it is the best time to take Aconite. If given with the first sneeze, sniffle, dry throat, dry barking cough, minor ear pain, fever or other sign that a cold is on its way, Aconite will often cut it short. Its cold symptoms may include a thirst for cold drinks, chills, a flushed face (sometimes just one cheek is red) and the fear that it is bound to get worse.*
Keep in mind that this list of rememdies is not comprehensive. There are lots of choices when it comes to cold & flu symptoms.
